About the Dean

Dean Nicolaos G. Alexopoulos

Nicolaos G. Alexopoulos was born in Athens, on March 30, 1942. He graduated from the Eighth Gymnasium of Athens, Greece, in 1959 and received B.S.E.E., M.S.E.E. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, in 1965, 1967 and 1968 respectively.

He joined the School of Engineering and Applied Science at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) where he was a member of the faculty of the Electrical Engineering Department from 1969 to 1996. While at UCLA he served as Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs from 1986 to 1987 and Chair of the Electrical Engineering Department from 1987 to 1992.

Since January 1997 he has been a professor of the Electrical Engineering & Computer Science Department and Dean of The Henry Samueli School of Engineering. He has served over the years as a consultant to a variety of and foreign corporations and the U.S. Government. In addition, he has been on the editorial board of various professional journals and more recently he served as editor-in-chief of Electromagnetics. He is the author of more than 250 refereed journal and conference proceedings papers.

Dean Alexopoulos is interested in electromagnetic theory and its applications in 3-D modeling of integrated microwave and millimeter wave circuits. His recent research activities have focused on the theory and design of printed circuit antennas, microstrip arrays, scattering (radar-crass section) from antennas in magneto dielectric thin films, non-reciprocal materials, the interaction of electromagnetic waves with metamorphic media, and computational electromagnetics.

Alexopoulos was co-recipient of the IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers) S.E. Schelkunoff Prize Best Paper Award in 1985 and in 1998. He was elected a Fellow of the IEEE in 1985 for "Contributions to the Understanding of Substrate-Superstrate Effects on Printed Circuit Antennas and Integrated Microwave Circuits" and in 2000, he was named Engineer of the Year by the Orange County Section of the IEEE.

In 2005, the National Technical University of Athens, Greece presented him with an honorary doctorate for his many contributions to the global engineering community.
