The Henry Samueli School of Engineering at the University of California, Irvine, has occasional needs for temporary Lecturers to teach courses in the Interdisciplinary Studies Program. During one or more of the quarters of the 2006-07 Academic Year, there may be a need for Lecturers to teach:

  1. Overflow classes of the upper division technical writing course for students with junior or senior standing in Engineering. This interdisciplinary course focuses on learning techniques for technical and scientific writing, preparing and delivering oral presentations, and the art of communicating technical information to the technical and non-technical public. Minimum qualifications include a B.S./B.A. in Communications, English, Engineering or Science, experience in teaching a similar course and experience in positions requiring technical writing as a major responsibility of the job.

  2. An engineering ethics course which is concerned with the application of ethical theory to moral problems confronted by engineers, scientists and managers and includes the topics of conscience and free expression within corporations, professional obligations to the public, the role of values in safety decisions, ethics codes and whistle-blowing. Minimum qualifications include a B.S./B.A. in Engineering or Science, Communications or Philosophy, and experience in teaching a similar course.

  3. An upper division course in entrepreneurship that is geared to junior, senior and graduate level students in a scientific or engineering discipline. This course focuses on learning leadership techniques and entrepreneurial skills to organize, prepare business plans, manage and assume risks for small and mid-size technology-intensive firms or companies. Qualifications include an advanced degree in engineering or related scientific field, an MBA (preferred), closely related work and teaching experience. Applicants should have the ability to attract guest speakers at the CEO/CTO level.
