Nowadays complex networks are pervasive in science and technology. They include examples like the Internet, social networks such as collaboration, citations and co-authoring, as well as biological networks such as gene and protein interactions and others. Complex networks research spans across mathematics, computer science, engineering, biology and the social sciences. In computer science area, increasing problems are either found to be related to complex networks or studied from the perspective of complex networks, such as searching on Web and P2P networks, routing in sensor networks, language processing, software engineering etc. The interaction of complex networks and computing is inspiring new chances and challenges in computer science.
With this special issue of Frontiers of Computer Science in China (FCS), we wish to explore the state of the art in the interdisciplinary field of complex networks and computing. We are especially interested in submissions that tackling computing issues from the perspective of complex networks or by the philosophy of complex networks. The topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
1) Computing issues of complex networks
* Mining and learning from network data
* Modeling complex networks
* Prediction of structural network properties
* Network dynamics
* Network topology
* Evolution of networks
* Community structures
* Topological motifs
* Algorithm issues
* Robustness issues
* Complexity issues
2) Complex networks in computing
* Social network analysis in human and animal societies
* Genetic regulatory and protein interaction networks
* Metabolic networks
* Massive graph mining
* Information networks
* Language networks
* Web search issues
* Searching and routing in P2P and Ad Hoc networks
* Routing in sensor networks
* Applications of network theory
